Gas Explosion Injures 8 in Shakhtinsk Apartment Building
A gas explosion rocked a five-story residential building in Shakhtinsk, Karaganda Region, on Tuesday, leaving eight people injured. Among those hurt were five police officers who had responded to a call about the incident.
Emergency Response
The explosion, believed to be caused by a household gas cylinder, occurred in the apartment building. The Karaganda Regional Emergency Situations Department (MChS) received a report about the incident from the police at 112. Emergency crews arrived at the scene within four minutes of the report, finding furniture and household items ablaze.
Evacuation and Support
Firefighters successfully evacuated five residents from the upper floors using ladders. Prior to the firefighters' arrival, police officers had already begun assisting residents in evacuating the building, with others leaving independently.
To provide warmth for evacuated residents, the MChS utilized a shift vehicle, and a temporary heating point was established.
Fire Suppression and Investigation
Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, which had spread across an area of 40 square meters. The exact cause and circumstances of the explosion are currently under investigation. A fire investigation headquarters, led by the head of the regional MChS, has been established at the scene, comprising fire crews, MChS rescue teams, medical personnel, police, and local government representatives.
Criminal Case Opened
According to the press service of the Karaganda Region Police Department, a criminal case has been initiated concerning the fire, which led to the intentional destruction of property. Police have apprehended a 40-year-old suspect, who is currently receiving treatment in a specialized unit at the Shakhtinsk City Hospital under observation. The suspect will be taken to a temporary detention facility once medically cleared. A comprehensive and objective investigation is ongoing.
