Iran Missile Strike Near Dimona Nuclear Facility Raises Regional Tensions
Iran has launched a missile attack targeting the southern Israeli city of Dimona, a location housing a significant nuclear facility. The strike, reported by both Iranian and Israeli media outlets, has heightened concerns in the region.
Impact in Dimona
The attack resulted in damage to a building in Dimona and left five individuals injured. According to Israeli media, fragments from the missiles may have also fallen near a school.
Missile Fragments and Air Defense
The Jerusalem Post reported that following the interception of the missiles by the Israeli Defense Forces, fragments landed in the Negev and the Western Galilee regions. Iran's Tasnim news agency claimed the missiles successfully penetrated Israel's "Iron Dome" defense system and reached their targets, although the specific facility hit was not disclosed.
Further details from The Jerusalem Post suggest that fragments from the Iranian missiles struck a kindergarten building. The newspaper noted that Iran has fired dozens of missiles with cluster munitions since the start of its "Lion of Babylon" operation, posing a challenge to Israel's missile defense systems which require preventing fragmentation for effective destruction.
Initial reports indicated significant damage to a building, though a direct impact from a warhead was not confirmed.
Israel's Response
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on Saturday that Israel would continue its operations against Iran as necessary, emphasizing that the operations would not cease despite the ongoing Passover holiday. This exchange follows Iran's earlier claims that the United States and Israel had attacked a nuclear facility in Natanz.
