Iran Seizes Two Ships in Strait of Hormuz Amid Tensions

Iranian forces have seized two commercial container ships, the MSC-Francesca and Epaminondas, in the waters near the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated the vessels were apprehended for allegedly operating without authorization and having connections to the United States and Israel.

Allegations Against the Vessels

According to reports, the IRGC claims the Epaminondas vessel collaborated with U.S. military personnel, while the MSC-Francesca has alleged ties to Israel. Both ships were reportedly intercepted for unauthorized passage.

Investigation and Cargo Inspection

The seized vessels are being directed into Iran's territorial waters for a thorough inspection of their cargo and relevant documentation. The Epaminondas, sailing under the Liberian flag, was reportedly en route to the Mundra container port in India.

Ship's Operational History

Citing the IRGC, reports indicate that the Epaminondas made 36 stops at 11 different U.S. ports between 2024 and 2026, unloading approximately 299,000 tons of cargo. The IRGC noted the ship's presence near Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz just two days prior to the seizure.

Strategic Importance of the Strait

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global chokepoint, accounting for roughly 20 percent of the world's oil, oil products, and LNG supply. This incident occurs amidst heightened regional tensions, following a U.S. Navy blockade of maritime traffic in and out of Iranian ports on both sides of the strait on April 13.
