Kazakhstan is expanding access to sanatorium and resort treatments for its senior citizens, offering opportunities for free or subsidized stays funded by the state. The availability and cost of these beneficial programs vary depending on a pensioner's category, pension amount, and region of residence.

Sanatorium Benefits in Astana

In Astana, sanatorium services are financed through the local budget. Free vouchers are primarily allocated to specific categories of citizens. For pensioners based on age, subsidized vouchers are available, with the state covering a significant portion of the expenses. These treatments often take place in the picturesque Burabay resort area, including sanatoriums near Lake Katarkol, and sometimes at the 'Balkhash' health complex in Priozersk, Karaganda region. The standard treatment duration is 14 days. While other categories can utilize this benefit once a year, age-qualified pensioners can access it every two years. It's important to note that travel expenses to the sanatorium are borne by the pensioner.

Sanatorium Access in Almaty

Almaty presents a slightly different approach. Free vouchers are exclusively reserved for World War II veterans and individuals with disabilities. For age-qualified pensioners, a partial reimbursement of costs is possible if their average per capita income does not exceed three minimum living wages (which was 152,553 tenge in 2026). In such cases, the pensioner contributes only 25% of the voucher cost. Applications are submitted to district administrations, and a special commission makes decisions based on financial circumstances.

Opportunities in Shymkent and Karaganda

Shymkent allocates approximately 5,500 free sanatorium vouchers annually for veterans and pensioners. These vouchers are contracted with facilities that have successfully passed state procurement tenders, such as 'Aksu demi', 'Kulparshin', 'Densaulyk', and 'Aisha Bibi'. The 'Izetti zeynetker' state health center also offers a 10-day treatment course. The application process in Shymkent is fully automated via the geo-shym.kz website, with around 29,000 pensioners currently on the waiting list.

In Karaganda, the cost of sanatorium and resort treatment is reimbursed for World War II veterans, those equated to them, and labor veterans. After treatment, the city's employment and social programs department reimburses expenses based on supporting documents. The maximum compensation amount is set at 316,120.42 tenge.

Additional Eligibility for Sanatorium Stays

Pensioners with disabilities and elderly individuals over 75 who require assistance with daily activities are also eligible for sanatorium treatment if medically indicated. These citizens receive social and medical assistance at the Rehabilitation Center in the Karkaraly district.
