Kazakhstan: 16 Million Citizens' Data Found in Illegal Collector Database
Authorities in Kazakhstan's Zhetysu region have halted the operations of a debt collection agency accused of illegally accessing and utilizing a vast database containing the personal information of millions of citizens. The investigation uncovered an information system holding the data of approximately 16 million Kazakhstani nationals.
Illegal Data Access Uncovered
The operation was a joint effort by officers from the Zhetysu Regional Police Department, in collaboration with the prosecutor's office and the Department of the National Security Committee. The investigation revealed that the suspects had unlawfully employed a specialized information system to manage citizens' private data.
Database Capabilities
This illicit database reportedly allowed users to search for individuals by their full name, individual identification number (IIN), and mobile phone number. This capability suggests a sophisticated operation designed for widespread data exploitation.
Arrests and Seizures
During swift investigative actions, three individuals suspected of organizing and operating this data system were apprehended. Searches were conducted at their residences and workplaces, leading to the seizure of computer equipment and mobile devices. These devices are believed to have been used for storing and processing the stolen personal data.
Ongoing Investigation
A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the matter. Law enforcement agencies are actively working to determine the full scope of the incident, including the origin and distribution channels of the compromised confidential information.
Police have reminded citizens that the illegal collection, storage, distribution, and use of personal data carry significant legal consequences under Kazakhstani law.
