Kazakhstan Government to Resign Following Constitutional Changes

Kazakhstan's government is set to resign later this year following the implementation of a new Constitution. This significant political shift will occur after the newly elected Kurultai convenes, requiring the current government to tender its resignation.

Parliament Reviews New Legislation

The decision follows parliamentary deliberations on a new draft law concerning the President. During a joint session of Parliament chambers in Astana, deputies reviewed and approved the constitutional law in its first reading. This legislation also formalizes the powers of the Vice President.

Senator Raises Questions on Government Resignation

Senator Bekbolat Orynbekov highlighted the constitutional provision that mandates the government to resign before the newly elected Kurultai. He inquired whether similar provisions would apply to the Vice President.

Minister of Justice Yerlan Sarsenbayev clarified that while the Vice President does not head a specific state body, they act on behalf of the President. Therefore, it is not deemed necessary for the Vice President to tender their resignation before the newly elected president.

Timeline for Constitutional Changes and Elections

The new Constitution, approved by a national referendum on March 15th, will officially come into effect on July 1st of this year. Elections for the new Kurultai, which will replace the current Parliament, are scheduled to take place in August.
