Malta Becomes First Nation to Offer All Citizens Free ChatGPT Plus Access

Malta is making history as the first country in the world to grant all its citizens free access to ChatGPT Plus. This groundbreaking initiative stems from a unique partnership between the American company OpenAI and the Maltese government.

AI Literacy for All

The program aims to educate citizens on the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). Participants who complete a specialized course developed by the University of Malta will receive a full year of complimentary access to ChatGPT Plus.

Program Rollout

The initial phase of this ambitious project is set to launch in May. Malta's Digital Innovation Authority will manage the distribution of access to eligible participants. The plan is to expand this opportunity as more residents, both within Malta and abroad, engage with the educational course.

Malta's Digital Leadership

Silvio Schembri, Malta's Minister for Economy, Enterprise, and Strategic Projects, highlighted the significance of this collaboration. "Malta is the first country to embark on such a large-scale partnership because we do not want our citizens to be left behind in the digital age. We are putting our people at the forefront of global changes," he stated.

OpenAI representatives acknowledged Malta's leading role in Europe and globally for offering AI access to its citizens through this partnership, expressing hope that other nations will adopt similar models.

Malta, a parliamentary republic situated in the Mediterranean, covers an area of 320 square kilometers and has a population exceeding 500,000. Currently, a monthly subscription to ChatGPT Plus costs $20 USD.
