National Guard Deploys to Secure All 17 Astana LRT Stations

Astana's new Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is now under the watchful eye of the National Guard, with soldiers deployed to all 17 stations across the capital. This measure aims to guarantee the safety of passengers and stabilize the situation, especially during periods of high demand on the new public transport infrastructure.

Comprehensive Station and Area Monitoring

National Guard personnel will be responsible for monitoring both the interior of the transit hubs and the adjacent areas. Their primary duties include maintaining public order, preventing offenses, managing crowd control at stations and transit zones, regulating passenger flow during peak hours, and ensuring compliance with transport regulations.

Close Coordination with Law Enforcement

The National Guard will work in close collaboration with police officers, transport officials, and the administration of the LRT facility. A key focus of this joint effort is the prevention of emergencies.

LRT Launch and Initial Challenges

The LRT system officially commenced operations in May 2026, with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev attending the launch ceremony. Since its opening day, the new transit system has experienced a significant influx of passengers. The high public interest from residents and tourists led to spontaneous gatherings at the stations. In early June 2026, the Police Department announced an intensified security regime to manage the situation and protect the infrastructure, a regime that now includes the National Guard.

Additionally, it was reported that CTS, a company affiliated with the Astana city administration, incurred a loss of 20.13 billion tenge by the end of 2025, a decrease from the 41.94 billion tenge loss recorded in 2024.
