Poor air expected in Almaty and Atyrau on Jan 5 amid fog and inversion, say forecasters
Kazhydromet has warned that air quality in Almaty and Atyrau will deteriorate on 5 January 2026 as fog, weak winds and a temperature inversion trap pollutants near the ground, increasing health risks for children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions.
This was reported by the Infohub.kz news agency.
What’s driving the alert on Jan 5
Forecasters expect short-term conditions that favor a build-up of harmful particles in both cities. Calm or light winds, persistent fog and a temperature inversion are likely to prevent dispersion, allowing pollution to concentrate at breathing level.
City-by-city outlook
Almaty: Partly cloudy and dry, with fog possible overnight and in the morning. Temperatures are forecast at −1…−3°C at night and +1…+3°C during the day.
Atyrau: Partly cloudy and mainly dry, with patchy fog. Temperatures are expected around 0…−2°C at night and +2…+4°C in the daytime.
Guidance for residents
Authorities advise limiting prolonged outdoor activity—especially during morning fog—opting for indoor exercise, and following medical guidance if you have asthma or other respiratory illnesses. Consider wearing a protective mask if needed, and ventilate homes outside peak traffic periods.
Context
Winter inversions are common across Kazakhstan and can worsen urban air quality. Earlier this week, forecasters also issued weather advisories for several regions. Residents are encouraged to monitor official updates from Kazhydromet throughout the cold season.
