Shymkent Street Cleaners Strike Over Low Pay and Poor Conditions

Street cleaning crews in Shymkent have collectively refused to work, leaving the city streets uncleaned and raising concerns about public sanitation. The drivers are protesting what they describe as unacceptable working conditions, including meager pay and excessive hours.

Unsatisfactory Working Conditions

Drivers report that their official work schedule from 9 AM to 6 PM is frequently extended, with some shifts ending as late as midnight or even 4 AM. Despite these extended hours, they claim no overtime pay is provided. Furthermore, they are allegedly forced to work on weekends without additional compensation, facing threats of immediate dismissal if they refuse.

Financial Burdens on Workers

Adding to their grievances, the street cleaning operators state they are compelled to cover the costs of essential vehicle maintenance, such as oil changes and parts replacement, out of their own pockets. When complaints are raised with management, workers report being told to resign.

One worker, Karlygash Derbesova, expressed frustration, stating, "You can't talk to that person like a human being. This is inhumane! The President's decree, the rights of people with disabilities are not protected at all. He doesn't think about that. The laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan mean nothing to him!"

Management Response and Worker Demands

Nurzhan Toleubekov, the director of the enterprise, has dismissed these accusations as a mere "misunderstanding." He asserts that employees are not required to purchase any parts themselves and attributes the confusion regarding a potential shift to a six-day work week to a miscommunication by a department head.

While a deputy city mayor has listened to the workers' demands, and some employees have returned to work under threat of termination, a significant group of 180 individuals is still demanding an investigation by the prosecutor's office and the labor inspectorate.
