Teen Uses AI to Create Animated Films Tackling Caspian Sea Crisis
A 16-year-old student from a remote village in the Mangystau region of Kazakhstan is making waves with his innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create animated films. Ermek Zhanibekuly is tackling important themes like ecology, patriotism, and peace, with his work on the Caspian Sea's environmental crisis gaining significant attention.
From Social Media Interest to AI Expertise
Ermek, a 9th-grader at Abish Kekilbayuly School in the village of Ondi, has been fascinated by computers since childhood. The increasing accessibility of AI tools has fueled his passion, leading him to dedicate himself to mastering these technologies. In just one year, through self-study, he has become proficient in AI, initially creating animations for personal projects and later taking on commercial assignments.
His portfolio now boasts over ten commercial works, ranging from touching love stories for newlyweds to celebratory videos and full-fledged cartoons. "It all started with an interest on social media," Ermek shared. "Now, I actively create animated clips for weddings. Computers have interested me since childhood, and the emergence of artificial intelligence gave me a huge boost."
Three Films, Three Powerful Messages
Beyond commercial projects, Ermek has brought several original ideas to life. His film 'Zhan men Tu' is an animated piece rooted in historical facts, exploring themes of patriotism and national values. 'Ak Kogerşin' (White Dove) is dedicated to the ideals of peace and humanism.
His most significant work, 'The Young Hero Who Saved the Sea,' is an environmental drama focusing on the fate of the Caspian Sea. For all three films, Ermek handled every aspect himself: writing the scripts, designing the characters, and editing the videos using AI tools.
Witnessing the Caspian's Retreat Firsthand
The idea for the Caspian Sea film stemmed from personal observation. "My father and I often discussed the fate of the Caspian," Ermek explained. "Compared to when I was in first grade, the sea has receded significantly. This situation became the basis for my work."
He spent about two weeks on the animated film, researching the scope of the environmental issue. The work resonated with audiences and earned him awards at competitions. He is currently participating in an AI competition organized by the 'Mangystau' television channel.
Ambition: Elevating Kazakh Animation
Ermek doesn't view his work merely as a hobby. He is passionate about the development of Kazakh-language content and socially significant topics. "Through my work, I want the world to see what concerns us here in Mangystau," he stated.
According to the regional education department, the student's work demonstrates a high level of digital literacy and creative talent – a rare combination for a 9th-grader from a small village.
