Top Judge in East Kazakhstan Arrested on Bribery Charges

A high-ranking judge in East Kazakhstan has been apprehended on suspicion of accepting a significant bribe, according to official sources. Adil Bakin, the chairman of the criminal affairs judicial board at the East Kazakhstan Regional Court, was taken into custody following a joint operation.

The Supreme Court has confirmed Bakin's detention. The National Security Committee's regional department, in collaboration with the internal security division of the Court Administration, conducted the operation in the city of Oskemen.

Allegations of Bribery

Investigators allege that Bakin accepted a bribe of a particularly large sum. The accusation is that he promised to rule in favor of a specific party in a legal case in exchange for the illicit payment.

Details surrounding the case and the exact amount of the bribe have not yet been fully disclosed as the investigation is ongoing.

Background of the Accused Judge

Adil Bakin, 59, has a long career in the legal and administrative sectors. Born in Oskemen, he began his professional journey in the prosecutor's office. Over the years, he served as an investigator and prosecutor, and previously headed the East Kazakhstan Regional Justice Department and the regional Public Service Center (ЦОН).

Bakin has held various positions within the judicial system since 2011. He was appointed to his current role as chairman of the criminal affairs judicial board in June 2023.

Context of Judicial Corruption

This incident is not the first corruption scandal to rock the Kazakhstani judiciary recently. In a separate case in Petropavl, two former court chairmen from the North Kazakhstan region were convicted. Bekbol Baimakhanov, former head of the Economic Court, received an 8-year sentence, while Yerlan Ybraev, ex-chairman of the Petropavl City Court No. 2, was sentenced to 6 years. Investigations revealed they had accepted bribes to influence decisions in cases before them.

This ongoing scrutiny highlights efforts to combat corruption within the judicial system.
