Uzbek Blogger Fined for Driving Jeep into Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan
An Uzbek blogger has been held accountable for driving his off-road vehicle into the Caspian Sea on Kazakhstani territory, resulting in an administrative penalty. The incident gained significant attention after the blogger shared a video of his actions online.
Online Video Sparks Controversy
Blogger Ilkhomjon Yolchiev posted footage on his social media channels showing him driving along the coastline and then directly into the waters of the Caspian Sea. The video quickly went viral, drawing widespread public attention and criticism.
Investigation and Penalties
Authorities later identified that Yolchiev had driven his vehicle into the Caspian Sea near the Bozshira tract in the Mangystau region of Kazakhstan. The Mangystau Regional Police Department confirmed that the blogger was charged under Article 505 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which pertains to violations of settlement beautification rules.
As a result, Yolchiev was fined 20 MCI (Monthly Calculation Index), amounting to 86,500 tenge (approximately $195 USD). This action underscores Kazakhstan's commitment to protecting its natural environments and enforcing regulations against such activities.
Precedent for Similar Incidents
This is not the first time a driver has faced consequences for entering the sea with a vehicle. In a similar incident in Aktau in 2025, a Toyota pickup truck driver drove into the sea, only for the vehicle to get stuck in the sand. Police at the time also issued a protocol against the driver under the same article.
