In Atyrau region, neurosurgeon Nurlan Akhmetov is accused of taking bribes from patients for performing operations that were part of the guaranteed volume of free medical care. According to the Anti-Corruption Agency, from January 2024 to March 2025, the doctor received more than 8 million tenge in illegal remuneration, reports infohub.kz.

The amounts varied from 100 to 500 thousand tenge per operation. In one case, a patient paid 1.5 million tenge for spinal surgery. "Despite the fact that the operations were performed free of charge under the guaranteed volume, the doctor demanded money from patients," said a representative of the anti-corruption agency. The criminal case has been sent to court.
