In Almaty, large-scale improvement works on Timiryazev and Zhandosov streets are nearing completion. Pedestrian zones will become accessible to residents starting in October, reports infohub.kz.
According to the Almaty city administration, all major works on the streets are planned to be completed by the end of September. After that, the pedestrian zones will be fully opened. During the improvement, sidewalks and bike lanes are being widened, and new lighting and an automatic irrigation system are being installed.
The city administration calculated that on Timiryazev Street, 62 trees and 23,247 shrubs have been planted. About 66,800 square meters of lawn are provided, 12 km of automatic irrigation system have been laid, and 93 lighting poles have been installed. On Zhandosov Street, 118 trees, 41,066 shrubs, and 1,703 perennial plants have been planted. About 21,700 square meters are allocated for lawn, 12 km of irrigation system have been laid, and 115 lighting poles have been installed.
During the repair, the improvement caused many questions among Almaty residents. Due to closed sidewalks and construction fences, pedestrians had to look for detours and go onto the roadway. Residents also complained about dust and inconvenient passages.
After the completion of the works, the authorities promise to make the pedestrian infrastructure more convenient and create conditions for cyclists and people with limited mobility.
Earlier, Kursiv LifeStyle wrote that the city administration explained the organization of works by the principle of "checkerboard order." While builders work on one side of the street, the other should remain accessible to pedestrians. However, in practice, citizens encountered sections where the usual passage was blocked.
