The long-awaited event took place at the Almaty Zoo: a Przewalski's horse mare named Kurbanqul gave birth to a foal. The baby was named Zhelmaya, and this is her second offspring, reports infohub.kz.
The zoo participates in conservation programs for saiga antelope, polar bear, Steller's sea eagle, and Przewalski's horse. Obtaining offspring from Przewalski's horses, listed in the Red Book, is a real contribution to preserving this rare species for future generations, the zoo noted.
"That is why our horses live in a quiet zone closed to visitors, where nothing disturbs their peace. Currently, Kurbanqul, Zhelmaya, and father Merey live separately, surrounded by specialist care," the statement said.
It is noted that the foal was born on June 14. The Przewalski's horse is one of the rarest wild horse species, listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan and the IUCN Red List.
