A scandal erupted in Astana over the color of school uniforms after a mother of a student at School No. 63 complained about a threat of a fine for black trousers. The capital's education department stated that black clothing is allowed in schools and that information about a possible fine is false, reports infohub.kz.
According to the woman, her child attended classes in black trousers, a white shirt, and a black vest. Afterward, she received a call from the school with complaints about the uniform.
"The principal calls about the uniform and says outright: 'Come in, you'll be paying a fine.' A fine for black trousers instead of dark blue? Seriously? How does the color of trousers affect learning?" she wrote on Threads.
The woman noted that the student had worn the same trousers during the previous school year without any complaints.
"If there are uniform requirements, a simple warning would suffice. But immediately telling parents about a fine over the color of trousers is too much. On what grounds are they demanding a fine?" the parent complained.
The Astana education department denied that the family faces a fine. They also clarified that students in the capital's schools are allowed to wear uniforms in both dark blue and black.
"Information that parents of students at the said school face a fine for the color of their school uniform is false," the department commented.
Following the complaint, the administration of School No. 63 was instructed to conduct additional explanatory work with teachers and parents. The department also demanded that incorrect interpretations of school uniform requirements not be allowed.
