The body of a climber who went missing 19 years ago has been found in the mountains of Kazakhstan. The remains were brought down from the Severtsev Glacier on August 19, according to infohub.kz.
The deceased's backpack was recognized by the climber's daughter. Almaty resident Anastasia Akhmetova shared on Facebook the continuation of the story of how her friends, tourists from Belarus, found the body in the mountains.
Social media users speculated that the man could be identified by the gear in the photo. "Such backpacks were common in the late 90s and early 2000s, with a heavy metal frame. This means the body lay in the mountains for about 20 years," they noted.
Soon, the author of the post was contacted by the presumed daughter of the missing climber, Nelly Mikheeva. "After 19 years, my father's remains have been found. In the morning, my friend sent a post with a photo of a backpack that looked so much like ours. Later, my husband sent me the same post. I contacted the Ministry of Emergency Situations, they gave me the phone number of the rescuer who brought down the body, and the investigator's number. He asked me to send all the photos and documents. Then he called back and said that they found an ID card in the backpack with my father's name," the girl said in a story.
She sincerely thanked the tourists who could not pass by the man's body, bloggers and media for spreading the information, as well as rescuers and police.
Earlier, Kursiv reported how an MES helicopter brought down the body of a deceased man from an altitude of 3,400 meters, after climbers from Belarus alerted rescuers.
