The full transition of the Kazakh language to the Latin alphabet will begin only after the approval of the new alphabet and spelling rules. This was reported by the website infohub.kz, citing a response from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan.
The ministry clarified that linguists from the Institute of Linguistics, the National Scientific and Practical Center "Til-Qazyna", and universities are currently refining the draft alphabet and spelling rules based on the Latin script.
In addition, the Ministry of Science reported that most of the funds allocated for the transition to the Latin alphabet were returned to the budget due to changes in work plans.
"The issue of allocating additional funds from the republican budget, as well as the development of unified digital communication tools, will be considered after the approval of relevant regulatory legal acts," the ministry summarized.
It should be recalled that in 2022, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the Institute of Linguistics to carry out specific work on the new orthography of the Kazakh language. Only after that, according to the president, can the transition to the Latin alphabet be discussed. He also urged not to rush this process.
In 2023, the head of state ordered to continue the work on transitioning from Cyrillic to Latin, "carefully studying the best world experience," noting the mistakes made in previous attempts.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that Kazakhstan has still not decided on the Latin alphabet.
