In the first seven months of 2026, revenues of Kazakhstan's automobile and urban electric transport enterprises from passenger transportation reached 303.1 billion tenge, almost three times more than in the same period of 2022, when they earned 105.2 billion tenge, reports infohub.kz.

Over the past year alone, growth amounted to 13.9%, and adjusted for inflation, 6.1%. Buses contributed the largest share: 192 billion tenge, up 15.5% year-on-year (real growth: 11.6%). Taxis came second with 101 billion tenge, up 10.5%, but in real terms revenues fell by 3.2%. Other modes of transport brought in 7.7 billion tenge, including 1.1 billion from trams and 1.3 billion from trolleybuses.

Passenger traffic grew by 41.2% over four years: in January-July 2022, 786 million people were carried, and in 2026, 1.1 billion. However, growth is slowing: in 2023-2025, the annual increase was 9-11%, but this year it is less than 5%. Nearly all passenger traffic (98.2%) is accounted for by road and urban electric transport.

The leaders in revenue were Almaty (59.7 billion tenge) and Astana (48 billion tenge), together accounting for more than a third of all receipts. They are followed by Mangystau Region (24.4 billion), Shymkent (24 billion), and Karaganda Region (22.5 billion). In terms of passengers carried, Almaty (267.5 million) and Astana (188.3 million) also lead, accounting for about 41% of total passenger traffic.

The revenue growth is partly explained by higher fares. In July 2026, road passenger transport prices rose by 7.1% year-on-year, with taxis up 13.4% and city buses up 3.3%. Over seven months, buses carried 971.7 million passengers (+4.5%), and taxis 88.8 million (+3.2%). Despite the increase in passenger traffic, taxi drivers' real incomes fell by 3.2%.
