Kazakhstan is revising its approach to assessing primary school students. First Vice Minister of Education Shynar Akparova has revealed details of the new format, as reported by infohub.kz.

According to Akparova, the changes are based on appeals from parents, suggestions from teachers, practical experience, results of monitoring students' academic achievements, as well as findings from domestic and international research.

The criteria-based assessment system remains in place. Starting September 1, 2026, updated assessment approaches will be introduced in grades 2-4. In the first grade, grades will still not be given.

In the updated procedure, formative assessment is retained, with its role being strengthened. To determine the results of mastering educational sections, interim assessment is introduced. First of all, the share of formative assessment in the quarterly grade will increase. Formative assessment, as before, will be conducted on a scale from 1 to 10 points. Only the approach to assigning points is being clarified.
