Kylian Mbappé, captain and forward of the France national team, has surpassed Lionel Messi's achievement to become the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, reports the website infohub.kz.
In the third-place match of the 2026 World Cup against England, Mbappé scored a brace in the second half, both goals assisted by winger Michael Olise. At the time of writing, the French were trailing 4-3.
Mbappé now has 22 goals in World Cups, one more than Argentine Messi (21). Notably, Messi is yet to play in the final of the current tournament.
At the 2026 World Cup, Mbappé has scored ten goals and comfortably leads the scoring charts. Messi is second with eight goals.
The last time a player achieved such a tally at a World Cup was Gerd Müller in 1970, when the West German striker also scored ten goals.
