Czech automaker Skoda is preparing a second generation of its Karoq crossover, despite having recently planned to discontinue the model in favor of the electric Elroq. The company has now changed its mind, and the new crossover could for the first time get a plug-in hybrid with more than 100 km of electric range, according to infohub.kz.
The first Karoq appeared in 2017, but due to electrification plans, the company did not intend to give it a direct successor. Its place in the lineup was to be taken by the electric Elroq.
However, Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer has now given the green light to a second-generation Karoq, which will retain the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. The debut is expected in 2027 or 2028.
“It will be a significant change from the current Elroq, but we are trying to hit the same price segment so that you get more value for your money,” Zellmer said.
The Karoq is currently offered with an internal combustion engine and mild hybrid systems, but the next generation, judging by the Skoda chief’s words, could get a full plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
According to Zellmer, the powertrains of the new Karoq will be close to those already used in the seven-seat Kodiaq. Therefore, the crossover could inherit a plug-in hybrid with more than 100 km of electric range.
The arrival of the new Karoq is not explained solely by demand for hybrids. Skoda had expected the Elroq to fully cover the Karoq’s niche, but that did not happen. Moreover, the Elroq itself has been very successful – according to Zellmer, it is the second best-selling electric vehicle in Europe.
The news is also of interest to the Kazakh market. Currently, the Skoda Karoq with an internal combustion engine is officially sold in our country from 14 million tenge. If the second generation gets a plug-in hybrid, the familiar compact crossover format will add the ability to drive on electric power.
It is too early to talk about prices and trim levels for the future Karoq. Skoda is only preparing the model, and the manufacturer has not yet disclosed its exact specifications.
