Turksib District in Almaty: Thousands of New Homes and Greener Spaces Planned
The Turksib district of Almaty is set for a significant upgrade, with plans encompassing new housing developments, extensive landscaping, and infrastructure improvements. District Akim (Mayor) Damir Akezhanov outlined the ambitious vision, which includes demolishing old buildings, modernizing courtyards, and creating new public areas.
Revitalizing Old Housing Stock
Turksib district faces a considerable challenge with its aging housing. It boasts 582 old buildings, nearly half of the city's total. To address this, a phased renovation program is underway. Currently, renovation work is active on seven sites, resulting in the demolition of 34 old buildings and the construction of 17 new ones. Over 590 property owners have already received new housing. Looking ahead, plans include the construction of an additional 175 multi-story buildings, offering more than 5,000 new apartments, which will involve upgrading over 155 older structures.
Enhancing Courtyards and Public Spaces
Simultaneously, significant efforts are being made to improve residential courtyards. By 2026, 25 courtyards are slated for renewal, with an additional 20 in the Zhyldyz-1 microdistrict set for complete renovation. This year, 24 projects will be implemented under the "Budget with People's Participation" program. Between 2022 and 2025, eight new public spaces have been established, including pedestrian zones and recreational areas, with ongoing work planned.
Future projects scheduled for 2026 include a pedestrian zone on Mayboroda Street, the improvement of Bauman Garden, a major overhaul of the Big Almaty Canal's embankment and beaches, and the cleanup and development of the Airport Lake with its embankments, bridges, bike paths, and observation decks.
Greening Initiatives and Environmental Focus
Turksib district aims to maintain its status as one of Almaty's greenest areas. It currently features over 772,500 trees, 63 green zones, five parks, Bauman Garden, and 15 flower gardens. This year's plans include planting 45,600 shrubs and 580 large trees, alongside sanitary pruning for 20,000 trees and formative pruning for nearly 5,000. Additionally, buffer zones along five streets will be landscaped with plants and equipped with automated irrigation systems.
Modernizing Infrastructure
The modernization of the drainage system will continue through 2026. This involves constructing 1.8 km of new drainage channels across seven sites and repairing 900 meters of existing channels on 18 sites. These improvements are crucial for reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.
According to the district Akim, Turksib district is maintaining steady development momentum as of the first quarter of 2026. The focus remains on completing key projects by the end of the year, continuing urban renewal, and advancing the renovation program.
