100-Year-Old School in Kazakhstan Leaves Students in Disrepair

In the village of Akkiya, located in the Baizak district of the Zhambyl region, primary school students are attending classes in a building that has stood for a century. The dilapidated structure lacks specialized subject classrooms, an assembly hall, a sports facility, and even a cafeteria, forcing students to learn in conditions described as if the building had been abandoned.

A Century of Neglect

Cracks scar the walls of the old school, and holes have appeared in the floor, highlighting the urgent need for renovation. It's unclear when the building last saw any significant repair work. The school's total area barely exceeds two hundred square meters, housing only three small classrooms. These cramped spaces are insufficient for the preparatory group and primary school students, with one room even serving as a makeshift cafeteria during breaks.

A New School Awaits

A glimmer of hope emerged last year with the construction of a new school intended to replace the aging facility. However, the new building has yet to open its doors to students. According to Dinara Zhanabayeva, head of the regional education department, the Baizak district education department is currently processing the necessary paperwork for the school's acceptance and licensing. The aim is to open the new school at the beginning of the upcoming academic year.

Currently, four new schools and eight additional educational facilities are under construction across the region. These projects are expected to alleviate overcrowding and address the issues in four outdated school buildings. Furthermore, six schools will gain much-needed cafeterias and sports halls upon completion.
