Almaty Braces for Record-Breaking Heatwave This Summer
Residents of Almaty are being warned to prepare for an intensely hot summer, as meteorologists forecast temperatures that could break previous records. The upcoming season is expected to bring scorching heat, with potential highs reaching up to +41 degrees Celsius in June alone.
Record Temperatures Looming
According to the Kazhydromet, Kazakhstan's meteorological service, this summer has the potential to set new temperature records. Daulet Kisebayev, head of the meteorological forecasts department, noted that the last recorded temperature extreme in Almaty was +43 degrees Celsius back in 1983. However, he cautioned that with an increasing frequency of extreme weather events, there's a possibility of surpassing this record, even within a single day this year.
Heatwave and Smog Concerns
While the current weather in Almaty may be cool, experts are confident that the intense heat is imminent. Clear skies and calm winds are expected to exacerbate the high temperatures. This combination can lead to a significant buildup of pollutants in the atmosphere, as they disperse less effectively in such conditions. Consequently, the city may experience thicker smog.
Meteorologists are advising residents to limit their exposure to direct sunlight during hot days and to stay well-hydrated. Looking ahead, July and August are predicted to bring rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, offering some respite from the extreme heat.
