Almaty's Airport Lake: Beautification Plans Spark Environmental Concerns
Almaty's Airport Lake, also known as the Small Reservoir, is a vibrant natural haven and a crucial habitat for rare bird species. However, the city administration's plans for its cleanup and beautification are causing significant concern among nature advocates.
A Unique Natural Habitat
Created artificially in 1963, the Airport Lake has evolved into a sanctuary for over 60 species of birds, various fish, and other wildlife. It's a rare urban spot where one can observe birds like eagles, geese, and ducks. The lake, approximately eight meters deep, holds about 1,250,000 cubic meters of water, primarily fed by the Small Almaty River. Its reed-lined shores provide an ideal natural environment for its inhabitants.
Administration's Plans and Public Reaction
In 2023, the Almaty city administration initially planned to mechanically clean the lakebed. However, due to the inability to drain the water, the project was postponed. This April, the administration intends to resume beautification efforts. The proposed developments include pedestrian zones, new bridges, a central fountain, recreational areas, and cafes. This announcement has ignited a lively debate on social media, with some residents expressing fears of habitat disruption and wildlife displacement, while others support the improved infrastructure.
Ecologists' Recommendations
Environmentalists are advocating for natural cleaning methods instead of mechanical intervention. They warn that draining the lake and cleaning the bottom could lead to the death of fish and aquatic plants. A similar situation occurred at Karasu Lake, which took over two years to restore. Experts suggest that cleaning can be achieved by collecting debris with specialized equipment without draining the water.
A Haven for Fishermen and Wildlife
The lake's surroundings are already equipped with paving stones, benches, and lighting. The pathways along the shore seem to cater to local fishermen, including both adults and children. One fisherman, Eugene, noted the presence of fish species like carp and perch. He also highlighted the clean air and abundant greenery around the lake.
Rare Bird Sightings
The Airport Lake is a significant bird sanctuary, home not only to common species like starlings, herons, ducks, and pheasants but also to rarer varieties. Photographer Andrey Osokin has observed migratory birds and small birds with distinctive crimson and blue hues. Zoologists estimate that the lake supports at least 60 bird species, a remarkable number for an urban area.
Preserving Urban Lakes
Urbanist Alesya Nugayeva points out the complexity of managing urban water resources, suggesting that city administrations often lack sufficient expertise. She emphasizes the importance of involving public organizations and experts in these processes, proposing the formation of a dedicated expert group to collaborate with the administration, a model widely used internationally.
Amidst growing water scarcity in Kazakhstan, experts urge for the careful use and protection of all water bodies, including urban lakes.
