Astana's Diplomatic Quarter Alley in Disrepair, Residents Concerned
A once-elegant pedestrian walkway in the heart of Astana, serving diplomats and international organization staff, has fallen into a state of neglect, sparking concerns about its condition and safety.
The alley, situated between Sarayshyk and Konyev streets near the Rixos Astana hotel, is showing significant signs of deterioration, a stark contrast to its former charm.
Damaged Walkways and Exposed Wires
Many of the paving tiles along the alley are broken or have come loose, creating tripping hazards. The cobblestones on the stairs have subsided, making pedestrian movement difficult. Even the tiles around the fountain area are partially destroyed and uplifted.
The lighting infrastructure is also in poor condition. Lamp posts feature mismatched bulbs, with some lights entirely missing. Worryingly, exposed wires are visible on some fixtures, posing a potential safety risk. Additionally, the waste bins are damaged, with some having broken supports.
Ongoing Repair Efforts
While some repair work is evident, with a few tiles replaced and new lamps installed, these efforts appear incomplete. The area surrounding the alley is heavily congested with vehicles. Local residents noted that access to this area was previously restricted by a barrier, which was removed approximately two years ago.
According to the Akimat (city administration) of Esil district, partial repair and restoration work was carried out on this section in 2023. Further renovation and maintenance of the alley are planned to continue this year.
