Ebola Outbreak: Nations Impose Travel Bans and Quarantines
As the Ebola virus continues to spread in Africa, nations worldwide are enacting stringent travel restrictions and quarantine protocols. These measures range from outright entry bans to mandatory isolation periods for travelers arriving from affected regions.
Countries Implementing Entry Bans
The United States has prohibited entry for foreign nationals who have recently traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda, or South Sudan within the past 21 days. This restriction also applies to green card holders.
Canada has imposed a 90-day entry ban on residents of the DRC, South Sudan, and Uganda, effective May 27. For Canadian citizens and permanent residents, a 21-day mandatory quarantine has been in place since May 30, even if they show no symptoms.
The Bahamas has temporarily banned travelers who have recently visited the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan for a period of 30 days.
Jordan halted entries for travelers from the DRC and Uganda for 30 days starting May 20. Only Jordanian citizens are permitted to return to the country.
Bahrain restricted entry for foreigners arriving from South Sudan, the DRC, and Uganda for 30 days, effective May 19. Returning citizens from these countries are subject to specific sanitary regulations.
Nations Enhancing Health Screenings
India's Ministry of Health intensified screenings at major international airports on May 24 and advised citizens against traveling to the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan. Consequently, the India-Africa Summit was postponed, and a meeting of the Grand Alliance for Big Cats was canceled.
Thailand implemented a 21-day mandatory quarantine for all travelers arriving from or transiting through Uganda and the DRC as of May 26.
Mexico has heightened surveillance at its airports due to the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa, with increased checks particularly ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Minister of Health has recommended avoiding travel.
Kazakhstan's Stance on the Outbreak
Experts believe Kazakhstan currently faces no direct threat from the Ebola outbreak, primarily due to the absence of direct air links with the affected regions. However, the risk cannot be entirely dismissed given the popularity of air travel.
On May 20, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan issued recommendations for tourists, advising them to seek immediate medical attention if any initial symptoms of the disease appear.
Previously, the Director-General of the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern due to the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa.
