Foreign License Plate Cars Protest Atyrau Police Crackdown
Atyrau, Kazakhstan – Over 200 drivers of vehicles bearing foreign license plates, primarily from Armenia, Georgia, and Russia, gathered on May 21st to protest what they describe as intensified police scrutiny and fines. The impromptu assembly took place at a parking lot near the "Saltanat Sarayi" complex.
The protest was reportedly sparked by the recent deployment of additional police patrols in the city. These officers have been conducting widespread checks, focusing on vehicle documents, insurance policies, first-aid kits, and fire extinguishers, with a particular emphasis on cars registered abroad.
Driver Concerns Over New Regulations
Adilbek Tabildiyev, owner of a Toyota Camry 50 with Georgian plates, expressed frustration. He stated he purchased the car for nearly five million tenge and had been driving without issue for years. "Now they say we need to get insurance immediately, but it doesn't seem like that will help," he commented.
Some attendees argued that such large-scale police operations are excessive for a city like Atyrau. "Atyrau isn't that big of a city. We don't have a large influx of aggressive offenders. So why this reinforcement? Or is the local police simply incapable?" one driver questioned.
Official Response and Scale of the Issue
Unofficial estimates suggest there are over five thousand vehicles with foreign license plates in Atyrau, with a significant portion registered in Georgia and Armenia. Despite the presence of law enforcement, city administration, and prosecutor's office representatives at the gathering, drivers reported receiving no clear explanations.
The Atyrau Regional Police Department confirmed that a unified garrison operation was conducted in the region. In an official statement, the department claimed the measure was aimed at preventing offenses, ensuring public order, and road safety. Police asserted that the operation would contribute to improving the "offense situation," reducing crime rates, and increasing citizens' legal awareness.
This protest highlights growing tensions between drivers of foreign-registered vehicles and local authorities regarding increased enforcement measures.
