Golden Horde Era Settlement in Atyrau to Become Open-Air Museum
A significant archaeological site in the Atyrau region, the Aktobe-Laeti settlement, is set to be transformed into an open-air museum. This initiative aims to preserve a vital piece of history from the Golden Horde era and make it accessible to the public.
Preserving a Historical Legacy
The project, initiated by the regional governor, is scheduled for completion by the end of this year. It involves the construction of an administrative building near the entrance and scientific restoration work on historical artifacts discovered during archaeological excavations in 2018-2019. Protective structures will be erected over the monuments to ensure their long-term preservation.
Attracting Visitors and Enhancing Tourism
To draw tourists and younger generations, the area will undergo landscaping improvements, and an archery range will be established. Aktobe-Laeti was a major craft and trade center during the Golden Horde period. This project seeks not only to renovate a single site but also to reconstruct the image of an entire historical epoch.
Historical Significance and Future Plans
According to Tolybay Dostybayev, head of the Center for Research of Historical and Cultural Heritage, the Aktobe-Laeti monument is a unique heritage that clearly illustrates the lifestyle, economic, and cultural connections of ancestors. Preserving it will allow the younger generation to inherit the rich legacy of the past and highlight the historical importance of the region.
The Aktobe-Laeti settlement dates back to the 13th-15th centuries and is located approximately two kilometers east of the Tomarly village in Atyrau. It is considered one of the important monuments of the Golden Horde era.
In 2024, the settlement's territory, covering a total area of 52.7 hectares, was fully fenced at a cost of 74.3 million tenge. The perimeter measures 2,935 meters. Previously, it was announced that a museum and pavilion would be built at the site in 2024, with a contract value of 606.32 million tenge. However, due to issues with banking procedures, the contract was terminated, and the project was included in the 2026 action plan with unconfirmed funding.
