Hungary to Return Seized Ukrainian Armored Cars Without Funds

Hungary has agreed to return two armored vehicles belonging to Ukraine's Oschadbank. However, the money and gold that were inside the vehicles will be retained in Hungary, according to sources cited by "European Truth.".

Investigation Details

Investigators from Hungary's Tax and Customs Service have informed the legal representatives of the Ukrainian side about their intention to return the seized vehicles. Hungarian law stipulates that the funds and gold must remain within Hungarian territory.

Background of the Case

On March 5, two Oschadbank armored vehicles carrying approximately $40 million, €35 million, and nine kilograms of gold were confiscated in Hungary. Hungarian authorities initiated a criminal investigation on suspicion of money laundering. They stated that the transport of the money and precious metals was overseen by a former general of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and several individuals with military experience.

Oschadbank asserted that the funds and valuables were being transported as part of an international agreement with Raiffeisenbank of Austria. Kyiv has demanded the release of the armored vehicles and the return of the property.

EU Aid Blockade

Hungary has been blocking financial aid from the European Union to Ukraine since February 20. This aid package amounts to €60 billion, intended to support Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression.

Budapest has explained its veto by stating that it will not accept Russian oil via Ukrainian territory following an alleged strike on Russia's "Druzhba" oil pipeline. Ukraine, however, claims that Kyiv has not carried out any repair work. In response to Budapest's criticism, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian oil has no place in the European market.
