Italy Rejects Proposal to Replace Iran in 2026 World Cup

Italian sports and government officials have firmly rejected a proposal to replace the Iranian national football team in the 2026 World Cup. The decision underscores a commitment to fair play and the integrity of the qualification process.

The Italian team itself failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time, losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final of the qualification play-offs via a penalty shootout.

A "Groundless" Proposal

The suggestion to substitute Iran came from U.S. Special Representative Paolo Zampolli. However, Italy's Minister of Sport, Andrea Abodi, deemed the proposal "groundless." He stated that qualification should be earned through performance on the field, not through external arrangements.

Calls for Merit and Dignity

Luciano Buonfiglio, the president of the Italian National Olympic Committee, expressed his disapproval, saying, "I would be ashamed. You have to prove yourself worthy to go to the World Cup." Echoing this sentiment, Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti also described the proposal as something that would cause him "shame."

Iran's World Cup Status

Iran's participation in the World Cup had previously been cast into doubt due to the ongoing conflict that began on February 28. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had commented on the situation, expressing hope for a peaceful resolution and stating, "Iran should come if they want to represent their people. They qualified and are a very good team. They want to play and should play. Sport should be outside of politics."
