Kazakh MP Recalls Opposition to Sarsenbayuly's Vice-Premier Nomination
In a revealing recollection, former Member of Parliament Altynshash Zhaganova has shed light on a pivotal moment in Kazakhstan's political history, explaining her strong opposition to Altynbek Sarsenbayuly's potential appointment as Deputy Prime Minister in 1994.
A Stance Against a Key Appointment
The year was 1994, and the Supreme Council had just approved Akezhan Kazhegeldin as the Prime Minister. However, when Altynbek Sarsenbayuly was nominated for the crucial role of Deputy Prime Minister, Zhaganova voiced her dissent. Her objections were so significant that she even directly challenged the President at the time.
Parliamentary Opposition
Speaking from the Supreme Council's podium, Zhaganova declared, "This time, the President made a mistake." Despite President Nursultan Nazarbayev's support for Sarsenbayuly's candidacy, Zhaganova firmly believed the decision was misguided. She expressed her disapproval, stating that Sarsenbayuly's past conduct and demeanor during his work at the city council were not to her liking.
Sarsenbayuly's Response and Later Reflection
In response to the criticism, Sarsenbayuly remarked that a future constitution guaranteeing freedom of speech would suffice, potentially rendering laws on the press unnecessary. However, time proved otherwise, and the law on media remained in effect. Years later, Sarsenbayuly expressed gratitude for not being appointed, attributing his avoidance of the role to divine intervention. He noted the subsequent collapse of the social sector under the management of the then-Vice Premier, stating, "God saved me that time. To this day, when I see that elder sister, I want to thank her."
This account, detailed in the 12th episode of the documentary "Difficult Period," offers a unique glimpse into the political dynamics and personal judgments that shaped Kazakhstan's early post-Soviet years.
