Kazakhstan Adopts Hybrid Model for Pediatric Healthcare
Kazakhstan is set to implement a phased introduction of a hybrid model for providing medical assistance to children. This innovative approach aims to elevate the quality of care by harmonizing the work of pediatricians and general practitioners, while preserving existing pediatric care units.
New Model's Objectives
According to Minister of Health Akmaral Alnazarova, these reforms are designed not merely for change, but to significantly improve the health and quality of life for citizens. The Minister emphasized a commitment to making decisions that align with international best practices, patient needs, and the specific realities within Kazakhstan.
Pediatric Units to Remain
Currently, Kazakhstan has approximately 1,300 pediatric units. The total number of primary healthcare units across the country reaches 13,375. Under the new hybrid model, these existing units will continue their operations.
Incentivizing Pediatricians
To further motivate pediatricians, additional bonuses and support measures are being introduced. The Ministry of Health plans to pilot this hybrid model, which is based on international experiences. In this system, pediatricians will focus on monitoring young children and managing complex clinical cases. General practitioners, on the other hand, will handle the broader patient flow at the primary healthcare level.
Enhancing the Education System
The team-based approach will be maintained, with pediatricians concentrating their expertise on areas requiring specialized skills, such as infant care and the treatment of severe illnesses. Simultaneously, there will be a strong emphasis on improving the qualifications of general practitioners. Starting September 1st, the training for general practitioners will adopt a more practical, experience-oriented approach. The curriculum will prioritize primary healthcare organizations, where future specialists will acquire essential skills for working directly with the public, over traditional clinical bases.
Child Population in Kazakhstan
As of today, Kazakhstan is home to nearly 7 million children, representing approximately 34% of the total population. The number of children in the country has increased by 1.5 million over the past decade.
