Kazakhstan Anti-Drug Chief Faces Criminal Probe Amid Abuse Allegations
Reports have emerged online concerning a criminal case initiated against Daniyar Meirhan, the head of the anti-drug committee in Astana. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has addressed the circulating information, confirming an ongoing investigation.
The allegations surfaced on social media, suggesting Meirhan may have abused his official powers and engaged in inappropriate conduct towards a female employee. It has been reported that a collective complaint was filed by approximately 20 staff members.
Official Confirmation and Investigation
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, materials related to the employees' complaints have been officially registered and are being processed according to established procedures. The ministry stated that every petition must be registered and investigated.
"Currently, investigative measures are being carried out to comprehensively and objectively determine all circumstances. No further information will be disclosed in the interest of the investigation," the ministry's statement read.
Daniyar Meirhan's Career
Daniyar Meirhan holds the rank of police colonel. His career in law enforcement includes various leadership positions within the South Kazakhstan regional police department from 2012 to 2022. Subsequently, from 2023 to 2024, he served in roles ranging from department head to deputy head of the academy at the Kostanay Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
He was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Combating Drug Crimes of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in September 2024. He then served as the acting Chairman of the Committee for Combating Drug Crimes from December 2024, and was appointed Chairman of the Committee for Combating Drug Crimes of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan in September 2025.
This investigation marks a significant development concerning a high-ranking official in Kazakhstan's fight against drug trafficking.
