Kazakhstan Digitalizes Bus Travel: Electronic Tickets and ID Checks Coming

Kazakhstan is ushering in a new era for public transportation with a comprehensive digitalization of its intercity and regional bus services. This significant shift aims to streamline operations, enhance passenger experience, and improve regulatory oversight.

Unified Digital System for Transport Documents

At the heart of this transformation is the introduction of a unified system for managing transport documents. This platform will digitally handle everything from passenger tickets and route information to carrier licenses and subsidy allocations. The system is designed to facilitate the registration, accounting, and storage of all crucial documents related to passenger transportation, ensuring seamless data flow between government agencies and transport operators.

Convenient Ticketing and Passenger Verification

Passengers will soon enjoy more flexible ticketing options. For international, intercity, regional, and local bus routes, tickets will be available not only at traditional ticket counters but also through digital payment systems and authorized online ticket agents. The boarding process will be simplified, relying on a ticket and a form of identification, with both physical and electronic versions of personal documents being acceptable.

Streamlined Processes for Carriers

Transport companies will also benefit from the new digital framework. Applications for subsidies on socially significant routes, covering urban, rural, suburban, and inter-district transport, can now be submitted via the "digital government" portal. This also applies to the approval of routes and schedules for regular urban and regional services, where carriers will submit route maps and timetables electronically.

Digital Licensing for Irregular Services

Obtaining licenses for irregular international, intercity, and inter-district transportation services, operated by buses and minibuses, will also be managed through the digital portal. The process for obtaining a new license is expected to take five working days, with renewals taking three working days, and duplicate licenses issued within two working days.

These new regulations are set to be fully implemented by July 12, 2026.
