Kazakhstan Honors Legendary Climber Yervand Ilyinsky with 'Hero of Labor' Title

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan has bestowed the prestigious title of 'Hero of Labor of Kazakhstan' upon legendary alpinist Yervand Ilyinsky. This high honor recognizes Ilyinsky's exceptional achievements in mountaineering, his significant contributions to the development of sports in the country, and his active community engagement.

A Pioneer in Mountaineering

Yervand Ilyinsky, born in Krasnoyarsk in 1940, moved to Almaty with his family in 1949. He has since become a celebrated figure in Soviet and Kazakhstani mountaineering, both as an athlete and a coach.

Leading the Way to the World's Peaks

Ilyinsky served as the head coach for the Kazakhstan national mountaineering team. Under his leadership, the team achieved a historic milestone by being the first in the world to conquer all 14 of the planet's eight-thousander peaks between 1991 and 2010. He also personally summited Mount Everest in 1990 and was among the first members of Kazakhstan's 'Seven Summits' club in 2007.

Nurturing Future Climbing Stars

His coaching career has been equally impactful. Since 1971, he has mentored numerous aspiring climbers. He has trained over 100 Masters of Sport of the USSR, 36 International Masters of Sport, and 24 Honored Masters of Sport. In 1993, he identified the potential of a young Denis Urubko, who would later become a star in international mountaineering, inviting him to his club. Ilyinsky continued to guide emerging talents like Maksut Zhumayev and Vasily Pivtsov, leading them in the ambitious 2010 project that saw the Kazakhstan team summit all 14 eight-thousanders.

This award celebrates not only an individual's remarkable career but also the enduring spirit of exploration and achievement in Kazakhstani sports.
