Kazakhstan is embarking on an ambitious energy expansion plan, aiming to launch at least three nuclear power plants (NPPs) by the year 2050. Furthermore, the construction of a fourth station is also being actively considered to meet the nation's escalating electricity needs.

Strategic Energy Development

This significant development aligns with the Atomic Energy Development Strategy, approved by the head of state. The strategy anticipates that by 2050, a minimum of three NPPs will be operational within the country. The potential addition of a fourth plant underscores the government's commitment to ensuring a reliable and environmentally friendly energy supply for its citizens and economy.

Exploring Small Modular Reactors

In addition to traditional NPP designs, Kazakhstan is also exploring the feasibility of constructing nuclear power plants based on small modular reactors (SMRs). This approach is being evaluated for its technological and economic efficiency. Such projects could offer a viable solution for replacing aging coal-fired power stations, contributing to the diversification of the energy sector and enhancing the nation's energy security and independence.

Previous Milestones in Nuclear Ambitions

The push for nuclear energy in Kazakhstan is not new. In March 2025, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highlighted the strategic importance of constructing NPPs, emphasizing the need to establish a new energy sector that would underpin the country's economic development for decades. Earlier, in July 2025, First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar announced that Chinese companies would be involved in the construction of the second and third NPPs.

This initiative reflects Kazakhstan's forward-looking approach to energy policy, aiming to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability and energy independence.
