Kazakhstan to Explore Underexplored Regions for Oil and Gas Reserves

Kazakhstan is set to embark on a new phase of exploration, focusing on sedimentary basins that are rich in oil and gas but have been historically underexplored. This initiative aims to identify and assess new hydrocarbon reserves within the country.

The announcement was made by Yerbolat Sagimbayev, the Minister of Industry and Construction. The exploration efforts will concentrate on the southeastern and northern regions of Kazakhstan.

Key Exploration Zones Identified

Specifically, seismic exploration activities are planned for the Shu-Sarysu and North Torghai depressions. The data gathered from these studies is expected to form the basis for more in-depth exploration and appraisal work.

The Shu-Sarysu basin, located in the southeastern and central parts of Kazakhstan, is recognized as a major sedimentary and water management area. It is known for its substantial oil and gas potential, as well as significant copper deposits and the country's largest artesian basin.

The North Torghai depression, situated in the northern part of the Kostanay region, is another promising area. While considered oil and gas-bearing, it remains largely underexplored.

Current Resource Landscape in Kazakhstan

Currently, Kazakhstan has approximately 10,000 registered deposits. This includes over 1,000 solid mineral deposits, 359 hydrocarbon fields, more than 3,700 common mineral deposits, and around 4,900 sources of underground water.

The majority of Kazakhstan's oil production is concentrated in its western regions, primarily in the Atyrau, Mangystau, West Kazakhstan, and Aktobe provinces.

Previously, the government allocated 40.7 billion tenge for comprehensive geological exploration work in 2025. Due to the current insufficient level of geological understanding in the Shu-Sarysu and North Torghai depressions for accurate oil and gas assessment, six seismic exploration projects are currently underway in these regions.

This initiative underscores Kazakhstan's commitment to expanding its energy resources and diversifying exploration efforts beyond traditional production zones.
