Kazakhstan Weighs Port Options for Tengiz Gas Processing Plant Equipment

KMG PetroChem has initiated the crucial process of selecting a maritime port to facilitate the delivery of vital equipment for a new gas processing complex at the Tengiz oil field. This decision is critical for the project's timeline and logistical efficiency.

Port Options Under Consideration

The company is currently evaluating two significant coastal facilities along the Caspian Sea: Ersai, located in the port of Kuryk south of Aktau, and Bautino, situated in Tyupkaragan Bay. A dedicated working group has conducted on-site inspections to assess the technical readiness and cargo handling capabilities of both ports, particularly for large and complex shipments.

Strategic Importance of Logistics

The choice of port hinges on several key factors, including the condition of existing infrastructure, accessibility of approach routes, and the overall logistics plan to the construction site in Tengiz. KMG PetroChem emphasized that these evaluations are designed not only to pinpoint the delivery point but also to identify the most cost-effective and reliable solution, taking into account the capacity of Kazakhstan's domestic infrastructure.

Focus on Heavy Cargo

Particular attention is being paid to the transportation of oversized equipment, which requires specialized docking and onward transit arrangements. The findings from these inspections will ultimately determine the optimal logistics hub that will serve as the gateway for the gas processing complex's equipment.
