Life Sentence for Yana Legkodimova's Killers Transferred to Penal Colony

Two men convicted of the brutal murder of Yana Legkodimova have finally been transferred to a maximum-security penal colony to begin serving their life sentences. Altinbek Katimov and Rizuan Kairzhanov were moved from the Atyrau pre-trial detention center to a correctional facility on April 20.

The transfer comes after a significant delay, with the convicts remaining in pre-trial detention for several months even after their sentences were finalized. Officials cited the need to form a special unit of the National Guard as the reason for the postponement.

Mother's Plea for Justice

Galina Legkodimova, the mother of the victim, had actively campaigned for the transfer, expressing her distress over the prolonged stay of the convicted murderers in the detention center. She had contacted the Committee of the Criminal Executive System to inquire about the timeline for their relocation.

Details of the Heinous Crime

Katimov and Kairzhanov were sentenced to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of Yana Legkodimova. According to the investigation, Kairzhanov offered 500,000 tenge to an acquaintance to assist in the murder, fearing their relationship would be exposed. Legkodimova was strangled and her body was disposed of in the Ural River. Her remains were discovered eight months later. A key piece of evidence in the case was the victim's personal diary. The court found both men guilty of premeditated and hired murder.
