Moldova Accelerates EU Integration Amidst Russian Troop Withdrawal Demand
Moldova is intensifying its drive towards European Union integration, making a firm demand for the withdrawal of Russian troops stationed in the breakaway region of Transnistria. This assertive stance has prompted retaliatory measures and increased pressure from Moscow.
EU Membership Ambitions and Transnistrian Troops
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has declared her commitment to securing swift EU membership, identifying the presence of Russian forces in Transnistria as a primary obstacle. She has pledged to the Moldovan people that the country aims to join the EU by 2030. President Sandu emphasized that the Russian military presence in Transnistria is illegal and hinders the nation's European aspirations.
Russia's Countermeasures
In response to Moldova's demands, Russia has issued strong statements and is expanding its pressure tactics. On May 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree simplifying the process for Transnistria residents to obtain Russian citizenship. This decree removes requirements such as a five-year residency in Russia, a Russian language exam, and a history and legislation test for foreign nationals living in the separatist region. Analysts interpret this move as an effort by Russia to bolster its influence in the area.
Ukrainian Support
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed his Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate with Moldova to assess the situation and develop joint responses. Both Kyiv and Chisinau have expressed concerns about potential Russian attempts to mobilize Transnistrian residents for the conflict in Ukraine, particularly since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Economic Crisis in Transnistria
The Transnistrian economy is experiencing a significant downturn following a reduction in Russian support. Local authorities are struggling to secure funds for salaries and social benefits. The region's leader, Alexander Rosenberg, described the situation as the "most severe crisis in recent years." The budget deficit has surpassed 40%, with social payments and salaries consuming 80-85% of the budget.
Reintegration Efforts
Data from Moldova's Public Services Agency indicates a sharp increase in the number of Transnistria residents seeking Moldovan citizenship. Over 2,000 individuals have submitted applications in the past three months. The Moldovan government is exploring options for gradually integrating the region into the country's unified financial system. Furthermore, through the combined efforts of Moldova and Ukraine, Transnistria's external connections are now largely channeled through the airport in Moldova's capital.
