Original 'Kyz Zhibek' Actress Speaks Out on Controversial Kamzol
Mеруерт Өтекешева, the acclaimed actress who portrayed the lead role of Zhibek in the legendary Kazakh film "Kyz Zhibek," has broken her silence on the recent public controversy surrounding a historical kamzol (traditional Kazakh garment). The costume, currently in the possession of producer Bayan Maksatkyzy, has sparked widespread discussion and debate.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Майя Бекбаева, Өтекешева shared her thoughts on the matter. "I haven't searched for that specific kamzol because I inquired about it when I was working at the film studio previously. Unfortunately, many costumes were lost during the years of independence," she explained.
A Long-Lost Treasure
The actress revealed that she had never seen the kamzol in question until she viewed a video where Bayan Maksatkyzy showcased it. This indicates the garment's rarity and the passage of time since its use in the film's production.
The Kamzol's Future
Addressing the public's strong reactions, Өтекешева expressed understanding. "I understand why many people are upset. However, I don't believe Bayan Maksatkyzy intended to offend anyone. She will certainly preserve the kamzol, and it will eventually find its way to a museum," the actress stated. She suggested that while it might not happen immediately, the kamzol could potentially be housed in a private museum or donated to the National Museum in the future, emphasizing that this would be Maksatkyzy's decision.
Furthermore, Өтекешева noted that the kamzol appeared to be in "good condition," a positive observation given its age and historical significance.
Background of the Controversy
The public discussion ignited after Bayan Maksatkyzy shared a post on social media wearing the valuable and historically significant kamzol from "Kyz Zhibek," detailing how it came into her possession. This post quickly gained traction, leading to heated online debates and even drawing the attention of the Ministry of Culture and Information.
Bayan Maksatkyzy had previously responded to the online discourse, clarifying the kamzol's ownership and her intentions for it.
'Kyz Zhibek': A Cinematic Legacy
Released in 1970 by the "Kazakhfilm" studio, "Kyz Zhibek" remains one of Kazakh cinema's most celebrated masterpieces. The film draws upon Kazakh folklore to tell the tragic love story of Zhibek and Tolegen amidst inter-tribal conflicts. The film's artistic style, including its distinctive costumes, is credited to artist Gúlfaýrus Ïsmaýlova and is considered a vital part of the nation's cultural heritage.
