Russian Tourists Stranded in Atyrau After Flight Diversion Due to Drone Alerts

Dozens of Russian tourists found themselves unexpectedly stranded at Atyrau Airport after their flight from Antalya to Kazan was diverted due to security concerns. The diversion, caused by a drone attack in Russia's Tatarstan region, led to a prolonged wait for passengers who were unable to disembark for several hours.

Airspace Closure Triggers Diversion

The flight, operated by Arendob Airlines, was rerouted to Atyrau, Kazakhstan, on the night of the incident. This measure was taken after the airspace over Tatarstan was closed due to reports of drone activity. Russia's Ministry of Defense confirmed that several unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down over the republic, prompting the security alert.

Hours of Waiting on the Tarmac

According to passengers, they were held inside the aircraft for approximately seven hours after landing in Atyrau. Despite Kazakhstan's readiness to receive the passengers, they were initially denied access to the airport terminal. Eventually, passengers were allowed into the building to collect their luggage.

Service Lapses and Further Delays

The situation reportedly worsened as the flight crew reached their mandatory rest period, leading to further delays. Compounding the difficulties, Russian bank cards were not functioning at the airport, preventing some passengers from purchasing essential food and drinks. Passengers expressed frustration and uncertainty about their onward travel, with flight times constantly changing and no accommodation or consular support provided.

As of the time of reporting, Arendob Airlines had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
