Russia's Internet Woes Spark Exodus Fears: Will Kazakhstan See Another Influx?

Growing internet restrictions and communication disruptions in Russia are prompting many citizens to consider leaving the country for more connected nations. This potential exodus has raised questions about the impact on neighboring Kazakhstan.

Tightening Grip on Russian Internet

The Russian government has increasingly been blocking internet access and causing communication outages, making VPNs, navigation services, and other online tools unreliable or completely unusable. In February, the State Duma passed a law granting the FSB the authority to shut down any form of communication in any region at any time. Furthermore, Roskomnadzor has stated the need to "consistently limit" the operation of the Telegram messenger.

Russians Prepare for Departure

Recent data indicates that as many as 88% of Russian citizens are prepared to leave the country, a figure nearing the 100% mark seen during the 2022 mobilization. This has led to a significant increase in Russians planning to relocate to countries with stable internet access and modern infrastructure.

Concerns for Kazakhstan

Social media users in Kazakhstan are expressing anxiety over the situation. Many are worried that a new wave of Russian arrivals could lead to a sharp increase in the prices of apartments and essential goods, similar to previous influxes.
