Scientists Discover People Are Talking Less: What's Behind the Trend?
A fascinating study has revealed a notable decline in human verbal communication over recent years, with individuals speaking significantly fewer words each day. This trend has researchers exploring the underlying reasons for this shift in conversational habits.
Analyzing Spoken Words
Scientists from the University of Missouri and the University of Arizona meticulously analyzed audio recordings from 2,197 participants, aged between 10 and 94. Their findings, gathered across 22 studies conducted between 2005 and 2019, point to a substantial decrease in daily word count.
The Shrinking Conversation
The research indicates that, on average, people spoke approximately 338 fewer words per day during the study period. Overall, from 2005 to 2019, the average daily word count dropped by about 28 percent. What was once around 16,600 spoken words daily has now decreased to approximately 11,900 words.
This reduction translates to an estimated 123,370 fewer words spoken by individuals each year. While the exact causes remain under investigation, scientists hypothesize that the rapid development of technology and the widespread use of written messaging could be contributing factors.
This phenomenon also comes amid reports that many children today are starting to speak later, between the ages of 3-4, rather than the typical 1-2 years old, a concern for many parents.
