Temu Fined €200 Million by EU for Safety and Illegal Goods Violations

The popular Chinese online marketplace, Temu, has been hit with a substantial €200 million fine by the European Union for violating the bloc's digital services legislation. This significant penalty stems from concerns over consumer safety and the platform's role in the distribution of illegal goods.

Platform Risks and Hazards Identified

According to the European Commission, Temu failed to adequately identify and assess the systemic risks associated with illegal products circulating on its platform. During a "mystery shopping" operation conducted by the Commission, several issues were uncovered. Some chargers sold on the platform did not pass safety tests, while certain children's toys contained chemical substances exceeding permitted levels or posed choking hazards due to small parts.

Concerns Over Design and Advertising Practices

Temu's recommendation systems and promotional programs also came under scrutiny. There is a particular concern that marketing campaigns, especially those utilizing social media influencers, may inadvertently increase the risk of illegal products reaching consumers.

Temu's Response and Next Steps

Temu has stated that it disagrees with the European Commission's decision, deeming the fine unfounded. The company has been given one month to rectify the identified violations. Following this period, the Commission will make a final decision in two months.

Precedent for Digital Service Violations

This penalty marks the second-largest fine imposed under the EU's Digital Services Act. Previously, the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was fined €120 million for failing to ensure transparency in advertising.
