Texas Sues Meta Over WhatsApp Encryption, Citing 'Massive Deception'
The state of Texas has filed a lawsuit against Meta, accusing the tech giant of misleading its WhatsApp users regarding the platform's encryption capabilities. The legal action highlights concerns about user privacy and the true extent of message security on the popular messaging app.
The allegations were brought to light by Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, who shared his perspective on the matter. Durov suggested that WhatsApp employees may have access to a significant portion of users' private messages, hinting at a broader deception at play.
Texas's Allegations
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated that Meta has deceived consumers about the reliability and scope of WhatsApp's encryption measures. "WhatsApp advertises its services as secure and encrypted, but these promises are not being kept," Paxton declared.
The lawsuit demands that Meta and WhatsApp be prohibited from accessing user messages in Texas without consent and seeks financial penalties. These demands are reportedly based on media reports suggesting Meta's access to WhatsApp messages and other data.
Meta's Response
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone has refuted the accusations, asserting that the claims made in the lawsuit are false. Stone maintained that WhatsApp cannot access users' encrypted messages. This legal challenge comes after Texas prosecutors have previously filed lawsuits against other major companies, including Google, for data privacy violations.
