Kazakhstan will reintroduce "Fundamentals of Law" as a mandatory subject in schools from the new academic year، Education Minister Zhuldyz Suleimenova said in an interview with the newspaper "Ana tili،" according to infohub.kz.
"We are embedding the values of law and order into educational programs،" Suleimenova said. "We must speak openly: currently، the number of offenses among students is rising. We studied the reasons. It turns out that the consequences of some reforms in recent years are having an effect. For example، since 2022، a number of subjects in senior grades have become optional، including 'Fundamentals of Law'. As a result، many students did not choose this subject، meaning they did not study it. Consequently، they grow up without fully understanding their responsibility before the law. Given that hundreds of thousands of graduates finish school each year، one can imagine how many students have drifted away from the concepts of law and order." She added that from the new school year، "Fundamentals of Law" will be reintroduced as a compulsory subject. "In addition، in grades 5 through 7، the subject 'Fundamentals of the Constitution' will be studied. Various opinions have been expressed about this initiative، but our position does not change. A child must learn to respect the law not in words، but through understanding its essence. They must grasp at school the importance of obeying the law، complying with it، and knowing their rights،" the minister said.
